A new study has revealed that debt problems are having a ‘severe impact’ on people’s lives and can affect their health, job performance and relationships.
The survey, which was carried out by the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS), found that 83% of people who had sought out financial assistance said that their debt problems had has a negative impact on many aspects of their lives.
Relationships were the most affected area with more than one third saying that their relationship with their partner had been affected by debt worries, while a further 22% said that their financial problems had affected relationships with their children.

Consumers who owe a significant amount of money on their credit cards may think about taking steps to consolidate debt rather than face the calls of a collection agency. At least that seems to be the consensus of officials with the Federal Trade Commission. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that the commission is requesting that states change their laws and arbitration rules regarding consumer debt-collection disputes. According to the FTC, the systems in place for handling collection disputes is broken, and weighs far too heavily in favor of creditors, putting too much pressure on debtors.

Debt help charity the Consumer Credit Counselling Service has identified that only 3% of those using its Debt Remedy counselling tool are over 60 years old.
The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) Statistical Yearbook for 2009 (yearly statement) makes alarming reading. It highlights, for example, that those with debt problems in Scotland, Northern Ireland and East Anglia were the least likely to ask for help for their debt problems.
Picking out a few other salient points from chairman Malcolm Hurlston’s statement clearly indicates that the personal debt problems of 2009 will not diminish in 2010. F

Edward Davey, the consumer affairs minister, announced this week that the government are planning to review the away that consumers are granted credit and how they deal with personal debt problems.
In particular the review will look at consumer understanding of the agreements they take out with regards to loans and credit card agreements as well as personal insolvency options like bankruptcy and Individual Voluntary Arrangements (IVAs).
Consumers could even face new financial literacy tests before taking out a new financial agreement, to ensure they understand the implications.
