Debt help charity the Consumer Credit Counselling Service has identified that only 3% of those using its Debt Remedy counselling tool are over 60 years old.

The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) Statistical Yearbook for 2009 (yearly statement) makes alarming reading. It highlights, for example, that those with debt problems in Scotland, Northern Ireland and East Anglia were the least likely to ask for help for their debt problems.

Picking out a few other salient points from chairman Malcolm Hurlston’s statement clearly indicates that the personal debt problems of 2009 will not diminish in 2010. For example he said that in 2009, “less than a quarter of people we counselled had the means to go on a plan to repay their debt.”

In particular CCCS has raised concerns that only 3% of the 153,000 people who have used its Debt Remedy service in 2009, are over 60 years of age.

Missing Out on a Way to Deal With Debt Problems

In a recent press statement the debt advice charity said that the older generation, “is missing out on a simple and anonymous way of dealing with their debt problems.”

There has been speculation about the reason for the reluctance of the older age group to seek online debt help. Although there is some agreement that it’s possibly a combination of a general reluctance of the older generation to discuss their debt problems with others and the lack of relevant IT skills needed to access the online Debt Remedy counselling session.

However in order to counter the perceived lack of computer knowledge, CCCS has been actively promoting the fact that free and low cost IT tuition is available, in many locations around the United Kingdom, that will enable people to understand how to get the best available online advice on debt.
