You always hear about the ways to get out of debt, but you almost never hear about what to do after your debt is gone. If you have created a logical plan to follow and have been adhering to it then at some point you will be free of your debt. So what do you do now? Can you abandon your thrifty lifestyle? Should you live in fear of debt happening again?
What Not To Do
The first thing that you should not do is easy. You should not go back to the behaviors that got you into debt in the first place. You know that if you go back to spending like you used to then you will end up right back in debt.
You also do not want to go back to being oblivious to your spending practices. As you climbed out of debt you most likely learned to be aware of every cent that you spend, and this is a habit that you should never lose. It is this awareness that will let you know if you ever start to backslide into old habits or into any actions that take you away from where you want to be financially. Everyone gets off track sometimes, but if you realize as soon as you start to get off track then you can change course and get back to heading in the right direction before any real damage is done.
How Should You Spend Now?
You may wonder how you should spend your money now. You do not really have to scrimp and save as much as before because staying out of debt is much easier than getting out of debt. Still, you don’t know how to spend because you no longer have the goal of getting out of debt.
This is the answer to all your spending questions. Without a goal you no longer know what to do so you need a new goal. Maybe you want to save for a vacation. Maybe you want to add to that retirement fund. Maybe you want to pay for college.
Whatever your goal, pick one and state it clearly. Now that you know that you can work toward a financial goal and achieve it you can choose a new goal. Decide exactly how much you want to put away each week or each month and work toward that new goal. Knowing how much money you have to spend on the essentials and on extras is easy once you know what your financial goals are.
Staying Debt Free Takes Work
It is true that staying out of debt takes work, but your goals do not have to end with just staying out of debt. You can go from moving away from debt to moving toward the things you want in life. It is true that maintaining your finances takes work, but you are working toward a better future. You are working toward the things that you want instead of just trying to stay afloat all the time. This is work, but you need to remember that hard work pays off.
Once you reach your goal to pay off your debt then you should celebrate. After the celebration, life has to go on and you have to decide on your next financial goal. After you pay off your debt then your bright financial future can begin.
